My acquaintance with Abe goes back to the early seventies, when he was a faculty member at the Queen Mary College. My first impression, which got strengthened with the passage of time, was that Abe was a highly intelligent, outspoken, original thinker and a man of culture. His pioneering work with his graduate student, Assilian, on fuzzy control has made him one of the most prominent figures within the fuzzy logic community. At Queen Mary College, Abe built up a very strong group of researchers in fuzzy logic and fuzzy control. But in the early eighties, the Government withdrew its support of the group based on misguided advice that fuzzy control had no future. This forced Abe to leave fuzzy logic. He moved into the realm of high-level policies related to communications, the Internet and mobile telephony. He became a highly visible figure in that realm and moved from Queen Mary College to the Imperial College. Abe was very bright, very knowledgeable and very articulate. In recent years he developed some serious medical problems but continued to be active and influential. He served with distinction as a member of the Steering Committee of the European Centre for Soft Computing. I saw him frequently at the meetings of this Committee. It was a deep shock to be informed that he passed away.
