No it is not!  The real objective of Ubuntu is to provide a meaningful
operating system.  When you continually refer to it as an alternative
you reduce its position and power.  It is wonderful that it has become
an alternative for those using proprietary Operating Systems but it
stands on its own and in a class above the others.

Ubuntu is the premier Operating System.  It is perfect for the
individual user as well as for the enterprise users.  It has grown
rapidly in popularity because it is complete, user friendly, well
supported both commercially and by a growing community.
