I was able to build out-of-tree successfully with -D BUILD_SHARED_LIBS=ON set
with the CMake build (which is now the only option). I assume this issue was
eventually resolved in the last ~7 years, or perhaps solved by the CMake
conversion. Please reopen if I have misunderstood.
