Please don't wait for the next deadline to work on including Hale in the OSGeo live release. The major technical work seems to be providing a version that does not include the jre and uses openjdk provided by ubuntu. I tried downloading hale from your site and removed the jre folder. I've done a few preliminary tests (on debian) and I didn't see differences compared to the included jre. It is perhaps a good idea to test this a bit more, and run your unit tests against openjdk as well. If any changes need to be made it is better that these are tested thoroughly and included in the project rather than branching of for OSGeo live.
