Angelos, I was thinking something like:
“No network has been configured” Assuming an easy check of the Network is possible in an automated way. Then maybe a link to the wifi docs at the end? We did some testing from a guest laptop in secured wifi office setting. Most new users will likely try something like this in their office for example, and it’s not obvious that the network needs to be managed upon first start up. I agree that a DHCP setup is likely to work just fine out of the box. Shooting at the lowest common denominator here unfortunately. bobb On Feb 17, 2016, at 1:51 PM, Angelos Tzotsos <gcpp.kal...@gmail.com<mailto:gcpp.kal...@gmail.com>> wrote: Thanks Jim for the clarification. Sorry, I had the wrong impression that the bug report was about wired network :) About wifi drivers missing, yes it is confusing for new users... would a popup message be enough to explain what to do? Perhaps a sentence in the existing popup pointing to a wifi how-to in our documentation? On 02/17/2016 09:41 PM, Basques, Bob (CI-StPaul) wrote: All, Making new thread. Consolidated the thread here. The no networking issue generally occurs when people boot the USB on their computer (not in a VM) and they are expecting to use WiFi and either the WiFi drivers aren't available or they don't realize they need to select and authenticate to a network. Note: Wired networks could theoretically have the similar issued but in practice tend to just work (or just don't get used as often). I think we could add some more details about how to configure networking in our installation documents in case someone else faces the same issue as you do. I am not sure though about a popup. We already have a popup with generic info to the user about where to get help and password file location. We hand out a getting started card for example. One item that we wanted to run past the list for, is an addition to the VM start screen. The idea is to add a Network checking process to the interface, something that pops up a dialog to explain that there is no network configured. Most people who have experience with setting up computers know to check something like this, even in a VM, but your average new user of a VM, doesn’t know by default that they also need to configure the network for the VM after is starts.
