Hi All!

South Jersey's weather wasn't much better than New England's. In fact, we had
3 inches of rain last night. I think I'm getting moldy!

Lee and I downsized into a smaller home in June and we've spent the summer
painting paneling- we're afraid to find out what's behind the panels. We now
have a screen porch overlooking the woods above the Cooper River. It's
beautiful!

I taught a short summer school for reluctant readers. It was only 3 weeks long,
so I'm not really sure of its lasting impact, but that was what the district
wanted. Basically, we got our reluctant readers through their summer reading
book to ensure that they are ready for September. hmm.....

I did get a few YA books read. I finally read Twilight- I usually avoid
vampire books on principle... and Hunger Games- I couldn't put it down.

I'm looking forward to September, but wish I had another week or two. Oh
well...

Karen Onyx

P.S. It's sunny and cool today- yea!

Bill, great idea; So nice to hear about everyone's summers! Here in New
England we didn't have much of a summer weather-wise. It was unseasonably
cool and we had a lot of rain for much of June and July. A few days here and
there of hot and sunny weather in August, but I feel sad about the weather
since we wait all winter for it!
I spent the month of July at the Boston Writing project, part of the
National Writing Project. If anyone is thinking of doing it, please let me
know, it was a very intense month, but oh, so wonderful, and it's free! You
get so many wonderful ideas to help you teach writing in the classroom, and
you even get paid to do it!
I also went to North Carolina to work on a book that is being published next
year by a group of teachers from the Teacher Leaders Network. It was lots of
hard work, but again, so wonderful.
My real vacation was last week spent in Falmouth, part of Cape Cod. So nice
to sit by the ocean reading an adult book, just for fun.
Hope everyone enjoyed their summers; and your weather was better than ours!
