There are plenty of point-to-point microwave links that don't go
anywhere near a satellite.

Sorry, poor terminology. Something with a much wider beamwidth.
And in the interests of furthering my knowledge (I certainly don't
profess to be a radio expert), I would be quite interested in why a
narrow beamwidth isn't beneficial in this context - offlist if you
prefer. I'm not pretending for one moment it's an alternative to proper
security - but I don't see how it can hurt in cutting down casual
attempts at eavesdropping, not to mention reducing the risk of
interference with other users of similar frequencies.
