Probably easiest is to temporarily modify the GRUB bootloader to boot to a shell. Another option is to boot to a live Linux CD/DVD/USB, then either blank out the root password (only the password portion, not the whole line!) in /etc/shadow or add one of your user accounts to /etc/sudoers. Some options listed here (root shell you've already tried): http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/how-to-reset-root-password-in-ubuntu. There are other tutorials online on how to do these things.
