You should never edit /etc/mtab, it is the file that shows what is currently mounted, and is written by the system.
/etc/auto.master doesn't exist on every distribution, but it is pretty much a map where to mount automatic filesystems, like floppy disks. http://linux.die.net/man/5/auto.master Jeremiah E.
