Can't say I've seen that with NIS in the past. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a system that uses NIS to recreate your problem.
If you are using RHEL, I'd strongly recommend putting in a call to Red Hat. Their support is the single biggest reason to go with Red Hat. You may also want to search through the RHEL bug reports on NIS. Good luck and let us know how things go.
