I'm having a bit of a challenge figuring out what, exactly needs to be
applied where; I'm bouncing around for coming up on two months with this
trying to get a fix, and in "the right place".

Perhaps one of the developers involved in this to date could helpfully
chime in?

This was the solution patch from Mathias Nyman,

"Re: xHCI regression for VIA USB 3.0 controller in
        handle_cmd_completion"
         http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg108830.html

in response to my original post/inquiry.

The test build @ opensuse that was done for this patch by Oliver Neukum
was @

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:oneukum:bnc878489/kernel-source

references

        imported commit c9b3c8c31b9a27cdc47d563a8a8cb7b2e154c9e2

but that seems to be an unrelated opensuse commit

http://kernel.opensuse.org/cgit/kernel-source/commit/?id=c9b3c8c31b9a27cdc47d563a8a8cb7b2e154c9e2

I don't know where "in Linus' tree" it is ...

As for which branch to apply it to, Opensuse's reply was

        >> Michal, which kernel tree is published in
        >> http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard

        > It's the stable branch in our kernel repository.

So applying it to whatever that "stable branch" at Opensuse is is what
I'm looking for, I suppose.

Checking at

        http://kernel.opensuse.org/cgit/kernel/log/?h=stable

that appears to be 3.15.4, currently.
