Hi all,

due to some failing dics I got myself a JMicro USB<->ATA,SATA
cable for data recovery and co.

However, I was quite suprised that the SMART (...) status querries
would not go thru.

# smartctl -a /dev/sdb
smartctl version 5.37 [x86_64-t2-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: SAMSUNG SP1654N Version: 0-37
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Thu Feb 14 18:19:09 2008 CET
Device does not support SMART

Error Counter logging not supported
Device does not support Self Test logging

As I do not know the underlying protocols off-hand, is that a driver /
sub-system limitation or not possible to get thru this USB mass
storage protocol?

Any pointer appreciated,
  René
