Even FreeBSD hates that DVD burner.  Tried FreeBSD 11.2 RC3 on a DVD-R, and
just like Linux, the bootloader loaded the kernel and then when the kernel took
over it spat out a bunch of "Hardware Error" messages when it tried to access
the DVD, then gave up and dropped to a shell of sorts.

I am wondering if using a different ATA cable will help.  I didn't even know
there was such a thing as a 40-wire and an 80-wire version until I read the
messages from the 2.6.25 kernel saying that I have a 40-wire cable.  2.6.25
says it's using UDMA/33 because of the 40-wire cable, while 2.6.26 says it's
using UDMA/66 and doesn't say anything about a 40-wire cable.  But now the
FreeBSD kernel says it's using Ultra DMA/33, and can't read the DVD-R.  Hmm.
