I solved this problem as follows:

I made up some new RAID devices on four identical harddisks (two on
Prim/sec master and two on a Promise controller prim/sec master). The
hard drives all had empty partition tables, nonetheless the start system
(Debian Potato 2.2rev3 on CD) assigned hda one and (hdc,hde,hdg) the
other CHS assignment.

To change this, used cfdisk. Cfdisk has a special menu for geometry
(press g in the main menu). You then have to change all the disks to the
desired geometry (which is only cosmetical in any case, see man cfdisk
and others). Before writing the new table, you have to make at least one
partition, if you try to write an empty table, CHS pattern won�t change.
I don�t know what it does if there is/are already partition(s) on the
disk.
