hi ya jason

for my raid5 stuff...

- i've not had any "raid5" disk failures...
        - simulated some failures ( pull the diskout )
and wound up rebuilding the array from backup
                ( faster/easier...guaranteed data integrety )

        - resync failed for me a couple years ago....
never tried(had to try) resyncing since ...

- i always keep backups of raid5 disks
        - faster to backup from backup systems

        - usually 1hr to rebuild a clean "system disks"
        - however long it takes to restore 10Gb or 500Gb of data
                - done it a few times... 2x in 3 yr at different clients
( learned: keep root passwd away from people )

        - if restore or resync time is an issue...
        - build a separate mirror of the entrire 500Gb raid5

- have a few reiserFS raid5 out in the field...
        - e2fsck is a pain to run even at 60Gb...

- running my small raid5 on celeron-500...
        - uses mostly for backups so am not worried about performance

- if people have/want 500Gb raid5 system
        ( $1500 ide - 5x $300ea at 80Gb ea )
        ( $2500 scsi3 - 5x $400 at 36Gb ea )

....they should have the $$$ for a ( $500range) hardware
raid5 controller ... seems silly not to ???

have fun raiding...
