I try with alsa modules on Debian with a 2.2.17 kernel :
Sound modules loads but nothoing appeared in logs.
Alsaplayer cannot initialize libalsa.so
amixer returns :
The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.

Under Mandrake 7.2, it's just the same...

I *really* think that the problem related to what lspci output :
00:0a.0 VGA compatible unclassified device: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10000 (rev 08)
        Subsystem: Creative Labs CT4760 SBLive!
Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping-
SERR- FastB2B-
        Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort-
<MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
        Latency: 64 (500ns min, 5000ns max)
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 5
        Region 0: I/O ports at b400 [size=32]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1

PME(D0-,D1-,D2-,D3hot-,D3cold-)
                Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME-

A "VGA compatible" device for a sound card is quite strange. I think that's why X is
confused.

Regards,
Fred.
