This turned out to be down to a bug in iPXE initrd alignment which is fixed in https://git.ipxe.org/ipxe.git/commit/aa11f5deda29f91f5b8592965ed00f4a65002eff and impacted any initrd. -- Sitsofe | http://sucs.org/~sits/
