Quite correct, as Juan Magallon also pointed out.

Now this I wouldn't have guessed from everything else I've read.

# mknod /dev/dsp2 c 14 35
# mknod /dev/dsp3 c 14 51
# dd if=/dev/dsp2 | od -i

works as expected.
