FYI...
AFAIK the new Apollo south bridge, VT82C686A, won't do DMA in 2.2.x...
w/o some hacking...
(Folks might want a back port of 2.3/2.4 via82C586.c for 2.2)
hdparm -d1, kernel 2.2.16, gives
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error )
hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
hda: DMA disabled
ide0: reset: success
Once back in PIO mode it runs fine but slow
