Hi James !! For every user on the network you need a poro connection
you could usetalise any RJ45 hub that matches the number of users you
have. Meaning that if you can get a HUB with 15 or more ports go
ahead other wise youll have to stack a couple of then togther to
achive the number of connections you need.

One key thing----its good to have say 2-->4 extra ports left to
facilate expandability.

As for the cableing needs ..Premade cables could be a easier solution
Other wise ..It dosent realy matter which end you start at just as
long their is consistency in the way its done.....Meaning if one end
of the cable is arranged red,Green & Blue at the other end the blue
should be in a straight line so thats blue from one end to the other
the same for the other colours.

Linux as a application server rally depends on if there is a server
application running on linux and the clients just acces it for
retival of files is possiable------

eg---the redhat SQL--server will allow for sql clients to acces file
as needs be.

Hope i was of some help.
