I think there's a vi mode in emacs - you can use that.  Plenty of emacs
howtos around (see linuxnewbie.org for a nice one)

(or the best cure would be rpm --erase / dpkg --purge or whatever of emacs).
Now what's wrong with good old vi? ;)
