[LIH] Logged in user not showing

Dear friends
 I am using RH 5.2 .It was working o.k.
Today i found that it is not showing logged in
users.After logged in as root if u give
who command it is showing nothing.
& if w command given no user name
is showing. but user tty from row is their.
What cold be the problem.Any suggestion
to sort out the problem.
