Linux refers to the kernel. Not to the whole OS, which is known as GNU/Linux. This is because GNU is the OS and not the kernel. For instance, you now have Debian GNU/kFreeBSD , which is now officially supported in the upcoming release of Debian (kFreeBSD-i386 and kFreeBSD-amd64).
