I think you can achieve the same functionality using rsync and cron, however what they offer is a daemon that looks for changes in a specific directory and synchronizes the directory to the remote server. I think they also offer the possibility of sharing a subdirectory (under that dropbox directory) with anyone else that has a dropbox account.
