I have a vague memory of OOo behaving like that on NFS mounts, many years
ago, and the problem being locking. Locking on NFS is tricky, as it's an
advisory more than a true lock.

If memory serves me right, the problem was that OOo tried to do a "true
lock" which was impossible, and thus had problem saving documents and
temporary files.

Unfortunately, I don't remember how I solved it (NFS option? OOo
configuration?) - but I hope the pointer can help. (Of course, for starters,
make sure that the nfs locking daemon is indeed running...)
