of David's needs.

You may want to look into ImageMagick and netpbm.
If you need/want to implement your own image processing algorithms, and
if you use Debian Etch, then the source code of netpbm, with
libnetpbm10/libnetpbm10-dev, can help you develop your custom netpbm
programs.
