The first thing is to replace the old modutils with the newer ones:
 - The 2.4 modutils *cannot* be used with 2.6 (totaly different kernel
   module loader).
 - The 2.6 module-init-tools provided a backward compatible fallback
   (at least they used to do this when I tested 2.6.0test on an
   old Red Hat 9). They called the older utilities if the
   kernel version was 2.4.x

What else? who know? Seems like a great adventure
with a complete reinstall at its end ;-)
