I am not sure what the original problem was, but whatever it is, I
upgraded from 3.0 as was available in some pre-release version of Etch
to the version currently available in Etch (3.0.3), and the problem went
away.

This does not go any distance toward explaining why the problem poped up
in the first place, or why it did not happen for just under a year since
the machine was originally installed, but one way or the other, we are
over it now, and things are back on track.

Thanks everyone.
