Hi,

Are these prices in Israel? Last time I checked (a couple of years ago),
prices were twice that in Israel, when you bought your own server (i.e.
the price doesn't include the hardware).
Can you recommend a good Israeli hosting company with such prices?

No, the price is in USA. The price DOES include the hardware (they
rent you a full PC, not a VM or shared resources).

As for Israeli hosting company, I don't have anyone to recommend. Most
of the big Israeli ISP's are robbing their customers in the daylight.
I checked few months ago and it went like this:

* You want a package for storing your Static HTML/JS/Images? you'll
find it pretty cheaply almost everywhere..
* You want PHP support/MySQL/PostgreSQL support? (I'm not mentioning
Perl, Python, or, God-forbid - shell account) - then welcome to our
Premium package prices.
* You want to do some media streaming? some CDN stuff? ASF/WMV
streaming? say hello to "Platinum prices" where every offer starts at
4 figures.

There are obvious reasons why Didi (as do I) would like the server to
be in Israel. The best reason is that I'd hate to have to fly to the US
whenever the machine needs a physical modification or a reinstallation...

For the price i wrote, they give me a nice basic machine. It burns?
explodes? the SLA says that within 4 hours (depends on your plan) they
give you a new server. You just have to restore from backup and be
happy.

I had tons of errors with the IDE hard drive back then. I submitted a
ticket. They told me it was probably the cable, but just to be safe,
they asked me if I wanted free of charge a 80GB drive for few days to
copy the stuff to a new drive. I told them to switch the cable, and
the problem dissapeared. Thats a service I would never get here in
Israel, and I had been in the hosting field since Shani.

Do something simple: call any of the "big boys" ISP's here in Israel,
and ask for a hoting packages for 10GB storage, 1TB transfer per
month, 5 IP's. See the price you're getting. When I did the same
thing, the price in US was cheaper even when they rent you the machine
(which doesn't cost you a dime extra. All is in the package you
select).

One last thing: the prices of 5MB DSL connection has been lowered
lately. I'm paying Netvision 99NIS per month for 5MBit up/512K down
and 79 NIS for Bezeq. I installed ddclient program and now I don't
need any hosting service since with this bandwidth I get all my needs.
People are visiting my web sites (few hundreds unique a day), I'm
using BitTorrent to download stuff and I'm surfing from home, and all
this run smoothly from my DSL. Thats another approach which IMHO
should be considered.

Thanks,
Hetz
