Easier said than done. The risks and costs of being an employer are high. Israel is an expensive place to do business. While the salaries are low compared to places like Silicon Valley, top salaries here match top salaries in the cheaper places of the U.S. The income taxes paid by employees are high, but the cost of health insurance is realtively low. The difference is that large companies pay most if not all of it in the U.S. As an easy rule of thumb, I found that the cost of an employee is about three times their salary in the U.S. This is split roughly 1/3 on salary, 1/3 on benefits and taxes and 1/3 on "overhead" (a cubicle and so on). In Israel it comes to closer to 4 times, half for the employee, half for the cost of overhead. Employee costs are higher too because although you don't pay health insurance, there are more holidays, longer vacations, free/cheap lunch and so on. This has a major impact on companies that provide hourly services as they have far few billable hours or expect that employees work long weeks (45 hours) to compensate. If you really want to strike it rich, start a company. If you succeed and hit it big, you can retire in a few years. The risks are that 75% of companies fail in the first year, and more than half of the remainder after that. The stress is high, and you can easily end up giving up two to three years of your life, loose everything you have and end up with bad health and in debt with no hope of ever coming out of it. Most people stay employees for a good reason. BTW, a friend of mine quit his job and opened a restaurant. He once told me how difficult it was because as an engineer he had to "kiss up" to his boss. At the restuarant, he had to "kiss up" to four customers per table, and on a busy night he had 12 tables that were full 2 to three times. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
