Actually it can be done easily in WordBasic. If you really wanted to be
spiffy, you could use WordBasic to propigate an Access database and
then use Access to format the letters and email them with Outlook.

WordBasic is included with Word and Outlook Express, which is free (as in
no charge) will do if he bought Word and not the complete Office package.

If you are not careful, what you will show your friend is that you are a
slave to your your prejudices and forced him to adopt Linux and use
tools he has to spend a lot of time learning, when he could have done it
in less than a day with Microsoft tools.

IMHO not a good way to promote Linux, FOSS, or yourself.
