 linux device drivers, 3rd edition. i think it's the only book that teaches
 you how to write kernel code and how to use the kernel's internal API.

Another vote for Linux Device Drivers (LDD). I mentioned in my previous email
that I find very few technical books on my bookshelf really useful. LDD is one
of those very few.
