I happen to know that knoppix and knoppix netboot fine with 500MHz CPU 
and 64MB RAM on the 'weak' machines. If you need help with suitable ROMs 
for ethercards email me. I have tested solutions and I can burn and 
install EPROMs in network cards and test them for you. There is 
provision for a boot menu in the boot roms. Knoppix running on the 
server with its terminal server option on was used as 'mother' server.
