Microsoft and Novell have announced a "collaboration," in which they will
facilitate interoperability and virtualization between SuSE Linux and Windows.
SuSE favors interoperability that will be open source; Microsoft doesn't.
Guess which one will prevail. A valid concern is that Microsoft will fork the
SuSE distribution with proporietary code in order to erode the open source
community's continuity.

The move is widely seen as Microsoft's attempt to eliminate Linux as a
significant player in the server business. They've done this before. This
strategy of coopting or buying businesses is jokingly called the "roach motel."
Partnering or purchased businesses go in - but they don't come out.

Partly, the boycott of SuSE is a protest against thinly veiled extortion.
Microsoft has stated that while Novell will enjoy an immunity from Microsoft
lawsuits on various patents (lawsuits that may not have merit but might damage
businesses that service and maintain Linux distributions), other distros will
be fair game.

So, this isn't simply about punishing Novell for dealing with Microsoft. It's
about protecting the Linux and open source continuities from a very real threat
that has historic precedent.

and Microsoft. I saw
Linux Journal has an article which essentially says everyone should remove SUSE
and use some other distribution.

Does anyone have a clear view of what the deal actually says or means?
