I'm about to add two new LINUX boxes to my home network. I finally convinced
my daughter to move to LINUX and my son to use a dual-boot machine (he still
needs his Windows games). However, because of my kids' technical level, these
machines must run perfectly "out of the box". Otherwise, I'll be spending too
much time on up-keep. Both boxes will run Mandriva 2007 (no distro wars
please - I currently have two Mandriva 2006 machines so I don't want to play
around with other distros). At the moment, I can think of two problems I've
had in the past and would like to avoid.

1 - On my wife's machine, the on-board sound card (MCP51 AC97) only worked
after installing proprietary nVidia drivers. And even then, getting it to use
ALSA is a big problem. Without ALSA, sound doesn't work properly in the
Firefox Flash plugin.

2 - TV card - I have Flyvideo 2000 cards on two machines and have never been
able to get the tuner to work - I ended up using an old VCR as a "MEMIR" to
choose the TV channels. (BTW - not a hardware problem - the cards work on a
Windows machine).

I would like suggestions for Motherboards and TV cards that don't have these
problems.

I would also like to hear from anyone who can suggest a good and CHEAP UPS
with Linux shutdown support. I have a Mustek 600 USB. It is supposed to work
with LINUX but I was never able to set it up.

Specifically, I'd like first-hand information, since unfortunately, I've been
disappointed in the past by inaccurate claims that certain hardware works in
LINUX.

TIA
