Hi Amit,
First of all, thanks a lot for the patience you show in trying to
help.
I am especially indebted for the information concerning the
incompatibility between the debootstrap of the stable
distribution and the install of the 32-bit chroot system.
As I know (some of) my limitations, I prefer to start with a
stable distribution and progress gradually towards the system I
really need. In the present case, as the sarge is unofficial, and
etch is official, the logic of the decision to install sarge is
questionable, but, anyway that is what I did.
In view of the same limitations, I like to have a system to fall
back on, in case I botch seriously the working system.
The inability to reinstall the system worried me seriously. So,
first thing I did after receiving your letter was to go to that
system, upgrade debootstrap to testing and repeat the attempt to
debootstrap the 32-bit chroot subsystem. This time it went
smoothly.
I did not proceed yet with debugging my old system. One of your
remarks suggested a possibility which I have yet to check: you
mentioned that some versions of dchroot operate only on binaries
while others only on scripts. If among the milions of installs
and upgrades that I did much too hastily these last days, I
inadvertently changed the version of dchroot, that might cause
its present paralysis (though I'd expect some error message).
Hope to be able to report progress in the following days.
Cheers, Avraham
