Let me do a wild guess - it used to fail after 10 retries?

"man pppd" (or even a lookup on linux-il archives) would have told you
that "maxfail = 0" should solve the problem for you (at least it
solved the problem for me back when I used it, and a few others on
this forum back then).

(Today I use a D-Link ADSL modem/router and no pppd from my Linux
machine so I needed your post to jiggle my memory with the "persist"
option I used back then)
