ddrescue indeed sounds like it's designed just for your situation.

A couple more possibilities to consider:

1. Manually build an identical partition table on the new disk and try to
copy each partition individually (assuming that your partition table
isn't damaged).
2. try "smartctl -t long" to try to repair the damaged disk (read smartctl(8)
patiently). Apparently this made bad blocks disappear from my previous
(not so old) 80Gb IDE disk.
