just out of curiousity - most USB disk-on-key devices i saw had a
partition on them that was supposed to be mounted (i.e. you'd need to
mount /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdb3, rather then /dev/sdb).

did you verify that you indeed should mount the entire device? doesn't
fdisk recognize partitions on this device?
