HELP! I performed routine upgrade to the most recent versions of Debian Testing packages in my laptop. Among other things, Gnome got upgraded to version 2.12. Unfortunately, I found no preferences dialog to specify that I want to use left-shift and right-shift combination as the hot key for switching between English and Hebrew keyboard layouts, which was the setting used before the upgrade. Desktop->Preferences->Keyboard->Layouts allows me to add Israel sil452 layout allows me to choose a default layout allows me to specify that I want a different layout for each window HOWEVER: Desktop->Preferences->Keyboard->Layout Options used, in previous version of Gnome, to allow me to choose a hot key combination for switching between keyboard layouts. Now it has only "Miscellaneous compatibility options", which set two MS-Windows compatibility options. I tried also: Desktop->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts However it does not have the Action, which I want (switching between two keyboard layouts), and no way to add more actions. I wanted to see if and which configuration file/s should be manually edited. So I tried to grep files in the following subdirectories of an home directory in my desktop PC (which has Gnome 2.8.3 under Debian Stable, and the keyboard switching stuff works OK): .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome_private (empty), .gnome2, .gnome2_private (empty). However I found no hint which contains the appropriate keyboard layout configuration (which I assumed that it is controlled by Gnome rather than by X-Window). If Gnome 2.12 no longer has the GUI, what configuration file/s should I manually edit to restore the functionality I need for Hebrew+English work?
