If the fancier routers are more expensive, you can consider purchasing them from abroad. I did so with my Linksys WRT54G, but it took me some eBaying to find a seller who's willing to violate Linksys' US-only regulations :)

Buying wireless routers from abroad has its own problems:

1. The stock firmware will not connect via a cable modem to all ISPs and some via aDSL.
This entire discussion was about Linux-running hackable WiFi routers, which are obviously running regular PPP etc.
2. The stock firmware will operate on channels 1-13, only 4-8 are allowed
in Israel and therefore customs can refuse to let you import it.

3. Some units have higher than 100mw EIRP (radiated power) and may not
be used in Israel. Again, if they want to customs can refuse it.
Indeed, and that's also why some sellers will refuse to sell them "overseas". The customs seemed to ignore mine: in fact, I didn't even pay VAT :/
If you are running SVEASoft's...
SVEASoft are evil :) Why use their stuff when you can use OpenWRT, which has a much friendlier attitude and an open development process? After all, an open firmware was the point of this discussion all along.
