Note that a lightening strike nearby or on the power or telephone line
will not be stopped by a UPS. Even worse are the cheap "surge protectors"
containing MOV (Metal Oxide Varistors). They are less than worthless
as you think you are protected, but in reality you are more exposed.

The only surge protectors that actually work are made in the U.S. and
sold by then names ISOBAR (by TripLite) and TransTector. ISOBAR ones
designed for 230 volts are relatively cheap (around $100 in the U.S.),
TransTector ones are 3-5 times the price or more.

TransTector units are very popular in telephone central offices and
airports, places where there is a good chance of lightening damage and
the equipment cannot be shutdown and disconnected.
