Hi, It's almost time to update my DVD player. I am looking at the following types of units:
1. DVD player with MP4 support. This is the cheapest option, about 400 NIS. The main disadvantge is that every time I want to use it to watch something I need to burn it to a CD or DVD. The advantage is that everyone in my family can operate it. They all understand pressing up/down arrows and play on the remote. We currently have an Apex one that plays MP4s (going to my kids) but the menu to play DVD-ROMS truncates the file names. 2. Video player with network access. Same as above but can read files directly off of a file server. The requirements are that it support long file names and lots (around 800) directories. Most of the files are MP3s, with an occasional OGG file. I only ripped my CDs to OGG files because I found that nothing I had could read them. :-( So I went back to MP3s. These range in price from 1400 NIS to 2300+ NIS depending upon if they include a DVD drive or not and wifi card. The cheap one has no DVD, but includes wifi. Both include 100mbit ethernet. Are any of these "linux friendly"? They all specify that they can read from a Windows server, but is Samba enough? 3. A computer with some sort of better interface, such as MythTV. Obivously the most expensive option, but it has several advantages, such as NFS support, recording etc. Are TV cards, remote controls, etc available here? If so which ones are recommended? I have HOT digitial if that matters. I don't really see the need to have the ability to record programs, but if it was there, my kids would use it (may be a good reason to NOT get it). Money IS an issue, so I would rather not spend 6,000 NIS for a computer if I don't need to. I'm afraid to buy a 1000 NIS computer as this will sit in my living room, run 24/7 and need several expensive add-ons. (tv card, video card that will support tv out). Does someone HERE sell a packaged system? Thanks in advance, Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
