I don't have a scanner to check this, but what were the permission settings
before you touched them? Did they allow group "saned" to access the device?
If so then you should have been able to just add your user to this
group ("saned" in /etc/group) and be done with it (at least that's the
phylosophy
behind debian's groups policy, as far as I can tell).
