Did, sounds like the guy needs urgent help with a crashed VM that won't start or something, NOT the right time to offer a competing FOSS project with less features and yet another lerning curve, unless it was one that had access to the API of VMware's file structure and could serve as an in-place replacement for it. As for internals experts - Shachar put it correctly in words. Especially if you are talking about an ESX server rather than a workstation version - VMware is one big, obfuscated monster.
