Dell service is bad because of the way Dell does business. They specify a model's functions and external design, but internaly there may be 5 or more different version of the exact same model each designed and built by a different company in different countries. Dell stocks parts for all versions in the U.S. and their EU depot in Ireland. There is no Dell Israel, only importers with license to sell their computers and use the name. The Israeli importers only import one version of a particular model. They will only repair units they sold and often don't have the parts for the other versions. Dell's international warranty means that you must ship it to the US or Ireland for repair. The Israeli importer's service department do not have a good reputation. Compaq/HP is the same way as Dell, but there is an official importer and an official warranty repair company with good service for localy purchased equipment. IBM on the other hand only makes one version of a particular model. You can buy an IBM laptop anywhere and get parts for it in Israel. They may not be the exact parts, but they will work. My son purchased the IBM model that was asked about (although for Windows) and I was very impressed with it. If I was in the market for a new laptop, I would seriously consider it, although I prefer Macintosh laptops because of Apple's service and the IMHO (temporarily) better CPU architechure. If you are not X86 centric, you might look at a Macintosh laptop. They are smaller, better made and there are several distros of Linux for them. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
