I went for it after seeing that aptitude promises not to remove gcc-3.3.
I was mixing up the front-end with the back-end.
The Frong end is "gcc" with version "-4.0.1" (or "-3.3.5"). The backend
(the catual compiler) comes in a separate package with the name
"gcc-3.3.5" or "gcc-4.0.1", and this one was NOT replaced.

It's just a matter of mixing up the packages on my side. Sorry.
