Check your crontabs carefully. Dead Rat included some obscure program to
update your clock from the hardware clock to prevent missed clock interupts
(which happen quite often) from skewing your time.

I'm not familair with Debian, but that does not prevent them from doing
the same.

The optimum way to do it, IMHO is to run NTPd with a stratum 1 server
as the source. If you have more than one computer on your network, only
sync one to the external world, sync the rest to it.

I am a Nevtvision customer, they use a GPS unit to give them a stratum
one server. I would avoid the overloaded server at HUJI if at all possible.

If you have some spare cash, have many computers to sync, and have a window
with a decent exposure to the sky (or access to a roof, etc), then you
may want to use your own GPS. Any one that talks the standard protocol
(whose name I forget, but a quick web search or NTP doc check will tell you),
will do as long as it runs on an external power source.

You might even be able to pick up a used one fairly cheaply. If you
post a note to the "geeks" list (www.mrbill.net), you can get information
on how to do it and possible sources of surplus equipment.

Last week, one person on the list grabbed a few units from a company
throwing them out and there was a disccusion on how to use them as
time servers.
