Thanks for mentioning OpenOffice (I hadn't considered it as a conversion
engine). It looks like a good fit. JooReports
(http://jooreports.sourceforge.net) seems to have already done the Java
integration I also need in my project.

Hello all,
[This is not strictly a Linux question. I hope it will be of interest to
the list.]
I am developing an enterprise application that will generate various
business documents (invoices, purchase orders, RFQs). The documents
should be printable (and pretty), and also be available in soft copy.
Suppose you pick up OpenOffice as your preffered word processor. You
start by creating a resonable template (manually).
Users just use this template.
Requirements:
A) Documents should be generated automatically by "merging" dynamic
content with pre-designed document "templates"
Basically, tell the users not to use manual styling unless really-really
necessary.
B) Designing document templates should be easy (A WYSIWYG approach
is required).
Almost as easy as editing a document.
C) Resulting documents should be printable.
Sure.
D) (Not strictly a must) - being able to send the documents to users
who don't have Microsoft Office.
For editing: requires a computer with OpenOffice installed. For viewing:
a computer with either a PDF viewer or a "Open Office viewer" (is there
such a program?), depending on how you work.
I'm not sure OpenOffice is the best tool for the job, BTW. It certainly
has much better and straight-forward styling support than MS-Office. But
also consider LyX.
