I think it's just like the Winmodem scenario - your machine does most
of the job, so they cannot release the source code due to secrets
algoritms..

well, about others - there are PCI based grabber cards (like
hippogauge) which are supported very well under Linux. Their prime
market is TV grabbing, but they are doing a very good job grabbing
from RCA input as well. Some models know how to grab and put data as
RAW uncompressed, and some others encode it directly (with a built-in
chip) to MPEG or MPEG-2.
